My Rating: B
In the middle of cold November night Geronimo receives a harrowing call form his cousin Trap. The phone keeps cutting out but just as he learns that Trap is in a castle in the dreaded town of Transratania and needs help the phone goes dead! With Thea and Benjamin at his side Geronimo races to the mysterious town to save Trap from a tragic fate!
When they arrive, things start getting creepy. The locals in town all reek of garlic, and there are large flying bat-like creatures that take flight in the foggy dark night, eeek! All signs point to the castle of Count Von Ratoff where strange events are occurring and Trap is at the centre.
The book is not scary, rather a comedic mystery involving lots and lots of tomato juice. Trap is convinced he is descended from noble blood and so travels to Transratania to locate the origins of his Furry Tree (think family tree!). Drawn to the castle of Count Von Ratoff, he finds the inhabitants of the castle are a little strange but ends up taking a job in the castle kitchens while he tries to discover his ancestral heritage.
When Geronimo, Thea and Benjamin arrive they really notice the strange actions of the count and countess and try to convince Trap of their assumptions. The inhabitants sleep upside down and eat the strangest concoctions of insects and bizarre animals. Trap is not deterred and it even seems that he has fallen in love with the Countess.
I enjoyed this book. It’s a wonderful lesson in how we can make assumptions about others based on certain aspects of their behaviour, however foreign they may be to us. While not one of my favourites it’s quite amusing in places and it was nice to see the tender, vulnerable side of Trap’s personality.
