New Mouse City is swept up by Olympic fever! The Gold Medal Mystery is an intriguing mystery that centres around the Athens Olympic Games. Geronimo is sent to cover the games, even though he has no interest in sports and hates the thought of people spending so much time watching and talking about it.
He meets his friend Hercule Poirat and together they uncover a plot to not only steal many of the gold medals at the games but also take over New Mouse City. I won’t reveal exactly how this plan unfolds because it’s an exciting and inventive tale but let’s just say it involves Geronimo’s friend, the brilliant inventor Professor Paws Von Volt and a diverse group of animals.
On a broader theme the story is about winning and losing and the strength of a true winner to accept losing. The tale can also be taken as a moral about cheating, particularly in sports and this theme would be a wonderful stepping off point to discuss the book further with young readers.
In the end not only is the mystery solved butGeronimo begins to appreciate the history and meaning of the Olympic Games as not just a sporting event but a rich environment for people to excel and do their best.
