Geronimo is beginning to notice how unfit he is. Struggling to get out of bed he runs to catch the bus and then has to give up because he is so out of breath. So imagine his surprise when his “friend” Champ Strongpaws strides into The Rodent’s Gazette Offices to inform Geronimo that he has been entered into Mouse Island’s famous Marathon race.

With the whole office behind him, how can Geronimo say no!

So begins Geronimo’s journey to health, fitness and a race full of natural and unnatural disasters!

The Mouse Island Marathon is a great book to let kids (and parents) know about being healthy, about exercising regularly and eating foods that help your body be the best it can be. Anyone can do it, and you are never too old to start.

In the book Geronimo meets a diverse range of people, including an older mouse who has heaps of inner strength and is still fit enough to run a marathon, despite his age.

Geronimo also helps a mouse who is bigger and stronger than he is, demonstrating that it is not just the size and bulk of your muscles that makes you strong.

At the end of the story is a 12 page section entitled “Champ’s Top Ten Tips For Becoming A Supermouse”. After reading the book out aloud to my kids I found they were really interested in this section because they had just seen how strong Geronimo had become in his body and wanted to learn more about how they could do the same.

The book shows readers that you don’t have to start strong to get strong, you just need to take small consistent steps and you can be fit, no matter how unfit you may feel at the start.

The Mouse Island Marathon along with The Race Across America would be a wonderful way to help motivate kids to enjoy being active.

We even get to learn the Mouse Island National Anthem!
