Summary:
The Mystery of the Great Cheese Pyramid
I'm off to Egypt! I climbed onboard a crabby old camel that would take me across the desert to the Great Cheese Pyramid. There, among mummies and hieroglyphics, I would learn the secret of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient Mouse World....

My Rating: C
Geronimo’s grandfather, who as it turns out, owns the Rodent’s Gazette where Geronimo works, has decided to rationalize the business and cut both expenses and staff. At the same time he sends Geronimo on a reporting job to interview a famous archaeologist (or Egyptologist as it turns out) about a new energy-saving invention he created from reading hieroglyphs in the Great Pyramid of Cheops.
There follows another disastrous trip for Geronimo, in a very cheap aeroplane where passengers have to buy their own parachutes! The middle section of the book deals with Geronimo’s adventures in Egypt while the final third returns Geronimo back to New Mouse City to deal, again with his grandfather.
Curse Of the Cheese Pyramid is a mixed jumble of a book and not the best example of the calibre the Geronimo Stilton series can offer. It’s almost as if the middle part was inserted at the last minute to make the story more accessible for kids (as most young readers would not relate to the economizing story line) or just to extend it so that the book length matched the standard 110-120 pages of other volumes. The art is fine, if a little pale compared to other books and there weren’t many illustrations that really popped out at me.
Overall it seems like the creators were still finding their feet (or paws) when they wrote this book, still finalising the style they that would eventually make the series a success.
What I Learnt (The Extra Bits):
There are no extras in the book; but the Egyptologist, Professor Alrat Spitfur, imparts a number of interesting facts about ancient Egypt including information on mummies, Egyptian gods, pyramids and the legendary discovery of Tutankhamen.
