Geronimo Stilton In Any Language

2009 July 16

Hi Again Mouse Friends!

Geronimo_ItalianDid you know that Geronimo Stilton was originally written in Italian?

Published by Edizioni Piemme of Milan, Italy, since the year 2000 he is now read in over 35 languages worldwide. Scholastic translated the books to English and brought them to our attention in January 2004, originally publishing four books in February of that year and then one book a month after that. Approximately 9 million of the estimated 30 million copies of Geronimo sold worldwide have been Scholastic's English translations. (Link)

But it is in Italy that his stories have had their biggest success, even out-selling Harry Potter. You can see an Italian language version of book 19 My Name Is Stilton, Geronimo Stilton in the image above. Kids love this guy and it is easy to see why! Given Geronimo's international status, it would be a fun way to learn a little bit of Italian (or any other language); to peruse Geronimo Stilton in his native language and then compare it to the English language translation. Hmm maybe when I have a spare moment...at least for now I can say Geronimo Stilton in Italian! :-)

Geronimo's adventures were published in Chinese in June this year, bringing this brave mouse reporter to an even larger audience. His adventures have also been translated into Spanish, Japanese, Dutch, Bosnian, Russian and Turkish. Over time I will be collecting copies of the various translations and it will be fascinating to see how he is promoted in different countries.

That's all for now.
Cheers and Cheese,
Inger

    Hi Kate
    Thanks for your email.
Unfortunately none of the Kingdom of Fantasy books are available in English yet.
The first one comes out in December and hopefully the others will follow soon after.
Í hadn’t heard about the scratch and sniff editions, they sound wild!
    Are they available in Italian?
    Cheers

    Hi Megan
I think Thea writes her own books :-)
There are many more books in Italian, the native language the series is written in.
I suppose the French translators are just translating faster than the English translators.
Hopefully they will catch up soon!
    Cheers

Does Geronimo speak Greek? I am learning Greek and would love to practise my reading in that language? If there is a Greek version, where can I obtain it?

    Hi Helen
I’m not sure. I can’t find anything after a quick look but I don’t know any Greek and the alphabet is different so I can’t type Geronimo in Greek letters.
    Can anyone else help?
    Cheers

    Hi Simona
I’m not sure if Geronimo publishes in Greek.
You could contact Edizioni Piemme and ask them for more information.
Otherwise someone who knows could answer here in reply?
    Cheers

All I know is she is might be Italian by the letter at the top of the page. Any suggestion on how to reach her?

35 languages and not yet in one of the major European languages, namely GREEK! Apart from Greece itself there must be thousands of Americans who speak Greek or would like to link to their roots and learn the language. My sister tells me that she finds reading Geronimo in Spanish and Portuguese is an amusing and easy way to gain vocabulary and improve. Why can’t I do the same for my Greek?

Spanish and versionsPortuguese are readilyavailable in these countries.
